Why Use Hemp Extract?

Why Use Hemp Extract?

With the passing of the Farm Bill in 2018, Hemp and its by-products are seeing a massive wave of new interest. But with that surge in popularity has come a veritable novel of terminology; isolate, terpenes, flavonoids, plant compounds – what does it all mean?

Today we’ll be answering one of the most commonly asked questions we get asked,

“What is Hemp Extract?”

Not only that, but we’ll be explaining what makes Hemp Extract different from isolate, why using a Hemp Extract product could improve your health, and how to find a quality extract. Read on to find out everything you’ve ever wanted to know about Hemp Extract.

What is Hemp Extract?

This is an important question. After all, knowing what you’re putting into your body and how it was made are fairly high up in the decision making process when trying something new. So, let’s start from the beginning.

It begins with the Hemp plant. A subspecies of cannabis, Hempcan be considered the more productive version of marijuana. While marijuana generally grows a lot of buds and flowers, Hemp is more woody and fibrous – it’s also fast growing. This is what makes Hemp such an environmentally friendly plant to use in the manufacturing industry, with rope and clothing being two of its common uses.

The key difference between marijuana and Hemp though is THC content. Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the psychoactive cannabinoid which gives marijuana it’s potent “high”. Hemp is naturally low in THC, allowing for all of its best qualities to be extracted, without the risk of any adverse cognitive effects.

Hemp is naturally rich in so much more than what you can find in an isolate. Hemp Extract contains a wide range of terpenes, flavonoids, oils, minerals, and vitamins. The more you refine the oil, the less of these beneficial components remain.

What is in Hemp Extract?

As you’d expect, plants are made up of a huge number of different elements. Here are a few of the lesser-known ingredients that you can find in Hemp Extract:

Responsible for the distinctive taste and smell of plants which include pine, lemon, mango, basil, and black pepper, terpenes give Hemp its aroma and so much more. The terpenes present in a Hemp extract can vary by strain, but around 100 varieties have been found in Hemp.

The compounds that give plants their color, flavonoids aren’t just a pretty face. As antioxidants, flavonoids fight free-radicals in our bodies, preventing cell damage. And that’s not all, some flavonoids also have antimicrobial, mood-improving and brain-boosting properties.[1]

Essential Fatty Acids

Not only are omega-6 and omega-3 both found in Hemp extract, but they’re in the ideal ratio for health, 3:1. Including these oils in your daily diet can improve skin, cognition and heart health.[2]

There are vitamins aplenty in Hemp, vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene are all present in Hemp Extract. These vitamins are what makes Hemp oil such a great supplement for improving hair and skin.

A range of minerals can be found in Hemp Extract. These include magnesium, iron, zinc, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus. Minerals are vital for maintaining the health of your body.

Health Benefits of Hemp Extract

A Hemp Extract can ease pain, reduce inflammation, improve mood, and much, much more. The range of compounds found within a Hemp Extract oil all have different properties, many of which overlap. Some of them even boost each others effectiveness, such as the impact of beta-caryophyllene on humulene, increasing potency by 50%.[3] The term “entourage effect” is used to describe this phenomenon, in which the combination of Hemp compounds is greater than the sum of its parts.

Here are just a few of the health benefits you can expect from a Hemp Extract:

Reduced Pain

Whether in humans or animals, studies have shown that the entourage effect of the plant compounds found in Hemp can ease the experience of pain. This has been shown not only for mild, localized pain but also in neuropathic and chronic pain such as is present in arthritis.[4]

Reduced Inflammation

Inflammation is believed to be the cause of the majority of health conditions. The components in Hemp Extract reduce inflammation through their effects on the CB1 and CB2 receptors, as well as by working indirectly on other receptors in the body.[5]

Improved Mood

The percentage of the population suffering from anxiety is rapidly growing, but relief is available in the form of natural, organic Hemp extract. The entourage effect of the combined compounds found in Hemp can reduce anxiety, relieve depression and improve general mood.[6]

Choosing a Hemp Extract

When shopping for a Hemp Extract, quality is key. Excessive processing or poor-grade Hemp will produce an oil that is inferior to others.

We recommend looking for companies that use organically grown Hemp that is GMO-free and has been farmed without the use of pesticides or fertilizers. This prevents you from consuming anything that could potentially harm your body.

Check the concentration. While a low-strength product may not give you the results you want, a product which is too high in strength may not be suitable for your needs. For total peace-of-mind, we also suggest that you opt for an oil that contains 0% THC.
